While it may seem like Davies Paints has launched this new product to compete with Boysen and its KNOxOUT Air Cleaning Paint, this isn't necessarily the case. This paint is meant primarily for application outdoors. It's air filtering capabilities are more suited for application outdoors.

KNOxOUT projects have been implemented in different parts of Metro Manila including in the Ateneo de Manila University and the University of the Philippines Diliman. Many of the walls along EDSA were also painted using this air cleaning paint.

[Business] Reusable Sleeves, Krispy Kreme, and products made from recycled materials

Krispy Kreme uses Cup Sleeves Made from 100% Recycled Plastic Bottles

I don't usually buy coffee from Krispy Kreme and I'm not fond of hot coffee. Fortunately, my boss was drinking a cup of hot coffee purchased from the doughnut chain one afternoon. After finishing his drink, he showed me the coffee cup sleeve, and I saw that it was made from 100% plastic bottles.

That was a bit of a surprise since the brown reusable cup sleeve looked really well-made. I thought it was made of expensive synthetic materials and not recycled plastic bottles. Perhaps this environmental initiative is something other coffee chains can adopt.

I know Starbucks uses coffee cup sleeves made from recycled corrugated paper, the difference being that Krispy Kreme's cup sleeves are reusable. Now, the question is whether or not customers will actually reuse the sleeves. Most of them probably discard the sleeves together with  their empty coffee cups.

Reusable Sleeves made from Eco-Friendly Materials Come in All Shapes and Uses

Recycled fabrics can actually be used to create sleeves for a variety of purposes such as CD holders, tablet PC cases, ice cream up holders, plant holders, and so on. You can visit Etsy's A Green Sleeve page for more creative reusable sleeve ideas.

[Technology] Solar Trees to fill Metro Manila's parking lots?

Not yet! But maybe sometime in the not so distant future, we could have solar trees beautifying the open-air parking spaces and powering solar powered vehicles in Metro Manila. The technology is real; a prototype already passed a key test phase for use in Europe last 2007.

Solar trees can serve as public art pieces, beautifying our parking lots

The beauty of a solar tree is that it has multiple uses. I can be designed in a variety of ways, and could serve as a form of public art. The solar power harnessed from it could be used to power solar powered cars and other gadgets. It could power nearby structures, streetlamps, or even tree lamps too.

How about solar powered waiting sheds for commuters?

The most advanced solar panels can now absorb over 99% of power from sunlight even during cloudy days, which is great for our tropical climate in the Philippines.

Shade for parking lots, or solar powered gasoline station roofs?

Of course, it might take some time before solar power gains popularity and acceptance in the country. There are few electric and hybrid vehicles in the Philippines, much less solar powered ones. If ever solar trees do come to Manila, remember that solar forests aren't adequate replacements for real ones!

[News] Greening the Cordilleras: A Globe Cordillera Challenge 3 promise

The Cordilleras used to house lush, verdant forests and is the cradle for many of Luzon’s major rivers.  Today, less than 50 percent of its total forest cover remains, prompting Globe Telecom to again engage in a greening campaign to save the massive mountain range from denudation.

Together with the Cordillera Conservation Trust (CCT), a non-stock, non-profit organization dedicated to help preserve the Cordillera mountain ecosystem, Globe aims to establish about 20 seedling nurseries in Sitio Labey, Brgy. Ambuklao, Bokod, Benguet and other parts of the Cordilleras using the funds that would be raised from the Globe Cordillera Challenge 3, a fund-raising sports activity scheduled on May 5.

At present, demand for tree seeds and saplings continues to increase, prompting CCT to put up Roots and Shoots Nursery Seedling Program to cultivate and propagate the much-needed plant materials.

“Globe is committed to environmental sustainability, thus, we work toward the protection and rehabilitation of endangered environmental areas like the Cordilleras.  By building small plant nurseries through the help of our partner, CCT, we hope to provide not only a possible livelihood source for the communities and public elementary schools where the nurseries will be put up but also  make the people value and preserve their home,” said Rob I. Nazal, Head of Globe Corporate Social Responsibility.

Sitio Labey, for instance, was devastated when typhoon Pepeng hit the area in 2009, with its lone public elementary school buried under tons of rock and mud caused by landslide.  With their peaceful lives shattered by the powerful storm, the over 300 residents of Labey learned a valuable lesson about the importance of trees in preventing landslides and floods from again consuming what they have painstakingly built over the years.

Deforestation rate in the Cordilleras has risen to alarming levels, resulting in massive erosion and groundwater depletion.  Each year, about 300 hectares of the Cordillera forest reserve is lost to fire, illegal logging and land conversion.  Increasing deforestation of the Cordillera mountain ranges, which serve as a watershed for the lowland areas of Ilocos and Cagayan regions, would hasten the drying-up of sources of water for domestic and irrigation uses in the said areas.

During the past two years, funds raised from the Globe Cordillera Challenge were used to buy saplings which Globe employees and community volunteers plant in the mountains.  In 2010, donations from the biking activity reached P261,000 equivalent to 15,000 seedlings while last year’s P600,000 total donation was able to buy seedlings for 30,000 trees.

The Globe Cordillera Challenge 3 will take over 250 bikers from Burnham Park in Baguio City to Mt. Cabuyao Summit in Tuba.  This will give them a chance to explore the local environment which showcases the ecosystem and culture of the Cordillera region.

Since the activity is not a race, it is open to bikers of all skill levels as long as they are fit to do mountain biking.  Bikers may send their P1,000 donation via Globe GCASH or direct to the CCT bank account.

However, even non-bikers can help build seedling nurseries by depositing their donations to the Cordillera Conservation Trust BDO Account (Account name: Tignayan Para Iti Konserbasyon Ti Kordilyera; Account number – 5180031673) or by sending it through Globe GCASH (text DONATE<space>amount<space>CORDI and send to 2882).

Major sponsors of the activity are Globe Tattoo@Home and Non Pareil International Freight and Cargo Service, Inc. while other sponsors are Gerry’s Grill, BPI Globe BanKO, and The Manor Camp John Hay.  It is also being supported by the Philippine Mountain Biking Forum, Philippine Mountain Biking Community and partner bike shops, namely:  All Terra Cyclery, Bike One, Bike Worx, Gran Trail, John Wilkie, King’s Bicycle Store, Paulina’s Cycle Center, Life Cycle Bike Shop and Sabak Sports and Adventure Bike Shop.

[News] Shark Surfing in Tauranga Harbour, New Zealand

After the shark surfing incident in Cebu, Philippines comes a new incident from Tauranga Harbour, New Zealand. The video, now removed from Mark Collins' Facebook page, shows his friend Eddie Bithell surfing on the body of a dead shark, while it was being towed by a boat. Both of them are members of the Tauranga Game Fishing Club.

(Photo credits: Bay of Plenty Times website)

Making the same excuses as the 18-year old Filipina and her companions, the two men claimed they didn't know what they did was wrong and that they weren't expecting the public to react so negatively.

In the Philippines, those involved could spend up to six months in jail for mistreating an endangered species. Meanwhile, New Zealand's Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF) is currently investigating the situation in their country.

Auckland Zoologist Catherine Cassidy contacted the Bay of Plenty Times, where you can find the full article: Shark Surfing in Tauranga Harbour.

[Business] Papemelroti sells eco-friendly stationery and furniture

Papemelroti, doing business since 1968, is one of the longest running green businesses in the country. Now, the company is a chain of gift shops known for selling environmentally friendly stationery and furniture. Its stationery products are made from 100% unbleached recycled paper, while its furniture is made from reused pinewood.

In fact, most people, including me, constantly call the company "Papermelroti" by mistake because of the paper products it's known for. They sell so many paper products from craft papers, notebooks, boxes, picture frames, trinkets, oddities, and lots and lots of scrap booking materials.

Did you know that using one ton of recycled paper saves the lives of 24 trees and that it takes chemicals to transform unbleached kraft-brown recycled paper into white paper? All paper products sold by the company are also handmade. Click here for the Papemelroti Guide to Handmade Paper Making.

In addition to selling green products, the company has also formed an environmental group called PPP or the Papemelroti Planet Patrol. Through its motto: "Do what you can, where you are, with what you have," the group encourages people of all ages and social statuses around the world to do things big and small. In other words, anyone can make a difference in saving our planet.

For a closer look at the company and its many products do watch this ANC Green Living TV episode featuring Patsy Paterno and Robert Alejandro, artists and owners of Papemelroti:
